5G-all you need to know about its cyber threats
Now we are leaping 5G networking, which is 100x faster than 4G, but at what cost? What are the potential flight risks of 5G regarding Cybersecurity, cybersecurity protection systems, and what does Cybersecurity do?
The technological advancements of humans have always urged them to make leaps and bounds in every field of life, and telecommunication is one of them. In 2010 the 4G was introduced with ten more speeds than 3G and much extensive coverage than 3G. And now we have come to 5G, so what is there to know about it?
5G cybersecurity threats:
5G is based on software, which increases the cybersecurity threats from poor software derives on the supplier end, which can increase cyber threats within a network and even create backdoors for the hackers, also making them harder to get detected. According to the report but Nokia IoT hardware devices are the most-attacked type of hardware, and in 2018 reports were made with 78% of malware detection on behalf of communication service provider networks. Publicly-recorded breaches increased by 25% in 2019 only, and it is still on an exponential rise, which is a significant cause of concern for Cybersecurity. According to another report, an unprotected IoT device connected to the network will be affected in 3 minutes or less.
Major dependencies:
New characteristics of 5G architecture and purposes, certain functions are becoming more sensitive such as crucial technical management functions. The network relies on the suppliers, which makes it a big chain of dependency, which also makes it vulnerable to the cybersecurity threats, and the impact of the attack also increases, leading to a large scale attack.
5G as backbone:
5G network, without a doubt, is a big leap from 4G as it covers a much wider area, and the speed of the network is skyrocketing, which means that it is an essential step towards the future. When we look at the past, we see that 3G was a good network when it came around. Still, it had a latency of 100 milliseconds between the communication of different devices connected to the same network, the 4G reduced that number to 30 milliseconds, and now the 5G is breaking bounds by claiming to have a latency of only one millisecond. Which means that 5G will become the backbone of many critical IT applications in no time, but it is not all good news as the network is super-fast, the attack can be faster with it as well, and this speed comes in due to many factors which mean that many people will be involved. It will be a big chain of line to make it work, and at every step, there is a significant potential of risks as any step can be potentially attacked by someone who has a little idea of how 4G and 5G work. The more people using a network by the same supplier means that the cybersecurity threat to all the people also increases.
Cybersecurity concerns:
5G network boosts broader data coverage and super-fast internet everywhere and near to zero latency between your devices. Still, there were already security issues concerning the 4G, and 5G is no exception as it also has some privacy issues. Today we have smartwatches and activity trackers that store plenty of data about each of us. If this data gets out, anyone can know about your personal things like the calories you have burnt today, places you have been at, your browsing history, etc. It is scary in a sense because if someone can remember such a minor detail about you, they can know even more personal information. As the 5G is still under development, it is of short-range, and because of how fast it is, anyone can track you in real-time knowing each step that you might be taking.
Conclusion
5G is a promising networking advancement. The 5G offers full area coverage and the latency between your house products near to zero, but it also brings a lot of concerns as many people suffer from cybersecurity threats in this day and age. Many people are reliant on their smartwatches, laptops, and other smart home accessories to get through their daily life. People fear that the growing cyber attacks will someday target them, and all their private data from how many steps they have taken today to what you were watching recently on your browser may leak. However, 5G is also a building stone for what is the world of the future, and that is why networks are working towards cybersecurity protection systems to make people comfortable about the security of data and to ensure that the data doesn’t get leaks away. Still, cybercrime is a big issue, and it is on its rise. Where do you think 5g is taking us?
